Welcome. |
I look forward to welcoming you to the 85th Southampton Stage Dance Festival and our 27th at The Point Theatre in Eastleigh on 17th May - 19th and 24th - 26th May 2024.
We provide an educational dance platform and performance opportunity for young people up to the age of 21. Despite its competitive nature we are proud of the friendly atmosphere of our Festival in which dancers are encouraged to give of their best. It will be a week of splendid entertainment.
This year we have had to make a modest increase to entry and audience fees to cover rising costs such as theatre hire and our festival management system but have tried to maintain prices that are reasonable.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Mrs Sule Taylor (Festival Committee Chairperson)
Invitation. |
Dear Dance Teachers / parents
I have the pleasure of announcing that our 2024 Festival will be held at The Point, Eastleigh between 17th and 19th and 24th and 26th May 2024 and will be adjudicated by Kate Martin. A copy of the syllabus can be downloaded here.
Entries will open to schools who participated in the 2023 festival on the 14th January 2024. All other entries (including private entries) will open on 15th January 2024 and will not be accepted before then. Closing date for entries is 15th February 2024 (or before if maximum dance time is reached).
The class timetable will depend on the number of entries received, but our plan is to run classes each day from 9:15am to 8:00pm. We aim to publish the class timetable by mid-March and the complete programme early in April.
Any outstanding trophies need to be retuned by 14th March 2025 at latest (if not already returned). This may seem a long time before the Festival, but we do need time to check that they are cleaned and good repair, and to re-label them with new class names and return addresses.
To return trophies please contact Vic Brunink ([email protected]) or the festival secretary ([email protected])
Trophies must be returned in good order. If a trophy is lost/damaged or not returned on time, the committee reserve the right to:

Kate Martin BA (Hons) Dance, P.G.C.E.
Kate was Janet Palmer's first pupil and trained with her, and at Matthew School, Northampton in RAD Ballet and ISTD Modern, Tap, National and Greek. She first entered the 'Sunshines' in 1966 and continued to compete in All England festivals until 1978. After studying for a degree in dance, she then worked as a professional dancer in a rival company to Hot Gossip in London and abroad in the early 1980s, as well as acting in T.V. programmes including 'By the Sword Divided', 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' and 'Shine on Harvey Moon'. She worked as a choreographer at The Royal Theatre in Northampton, before studying for a P.G.C.E. as a dance specialist and then working as Head of Dance, Advisory Teacher of Dance, helping to organise the All England Midlands North Regionals and choreographer for a student touring dance company. Throughout the years Kate has maintained close contact with the festival movement, being on the committee for Northampton Festival, working as an adjudicator's scribe and entering her own children successfully. Kate now works as a Dance and Musical Theatre History Lecturer at Urdang Academy, London and thoroughly enjoys working with students in vocational training as well as maintaining contact with the state sector as an 'A Level' examiner. She is more than happy to adjudicate virtually, either for live or recorded online festivals and has spent the summer of 2020 lecturing online and editing professional showreels for agents so if very familiar with the virtual world! |

LSC Scholarship. |
Dancers entering solos at the Southampton Stage Dance Festival have a wonderful opportunity: as result of the generosity of the London Studio Centre, we hope to be able to award one dancer aged 16yrs+ a 5-day Summer Course. These courses are designed for students who are thinking of entering full- time dance training. |
The 2024 programme is as follows: (for dates see LSC website)
|
|
All courses require a minimum of 3 years dance training including at least 2 years of ballet. The Festival will make a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs.
The Scholarship winner will be chosen by our adjudicator based on the solos performed at the Festival. Interested/qualified dancers should register their names with the festival secretary, or at the ticket desk during the Festival (before their first dance). [email protected]
